Where converting JPG to PNG actually pays off
This converter takes JPEG photos and screenshots and rewrites them as PNG files inside your browser. The most common reason to do this is to move out of a lossy format and into a lossless one: once an image is a PNG, saving, re-exporting, or editing it again will not introduce fresh JPEG compression artifacts. That makes it a sensible step before you hand an image into an editor, a design tool, or a pipeline that will modify and re-save it several times.
For web and product work, PNG is the format many UI assets, icons captured as JPGs, diagrams, and flat-color graphics are expected to be in, and it is the safe choice when you later need to add a transparent background in an editor. For office, admin, and student use, it is handy when a document template, slide tool, or upload form specifically asks for PNG and rejects JPG, or when you want a screenshot stored in a format that survives repeated edits without degrading.
Because the file stays on your device, it also fits cases where the picture is sensitive: an ID photo, a signed form, a private screenshot, or internal business material you would rather not upload to a third-party server just to change a file extension.
The drop-process-download flow and what it supports
The flow is deliberately short. You drop a .jpg or .jpeg file onto the dropzone (or click to pick one), the tool shows the filename and size, you press Convert to PNG, and a download panel appears with the new file and a before/after size comparison. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using a canvas: the JPEG is decoded, painted onto a canvas, and re-encoded as PNG, so nothing is uploaded and nothing persists once you close the tab.
PNG output is lossless, so there is intentionally no quality slider here. That is why the interface notes PNG needs no quality setting, unlike the JPG and WebP directions of the same tool, which expose a quality control. There is also no background-color option, because PNG keeps an alpha channel rather than flattening transparency the way a JPG export would.
What it does not do is also worth stating plainly. It converts one file at a time rather than batching a folder, it does not resize, crop, or compress beyond the format change, and it does not recover detail that the original JPEG already discarded. It accepts JPG and JPEG input specifically; other formats belong in the matching converters (PNG, WebP) rather than this one.
Honest limitations and the mistakes people make
The biggest misconception is that converting to PNG improves quality. It does not. A JPEG has already thrown away data and may carry visible compression artifacts, blocky edges, or color banding; turning it into a PNG locks those flaws in at full fidelity rather than cleaning them up. The result is faithful to the JPEG you started with, not to some sharper original.
Expect the file to get larger, often substantially. PNG is lossless and stores photographic detail far less efficiently than JPEG, so a small photo can become several times its original size. PNG is a good fit for screenshots, line art, and flat graphics, but a poor fit if your real goal is a smaller file for the web. A JPEG can also never gain real transparency by becoming a PNG: the background was already solid in the source, so the PNG simply inherits that solid background.
Two further details trip people up. Because the image is redrawn through a canvas, embedded metadata such as EXIF, GPS, and color profiles is generally not carried into the PNG, and a baked-in color-profile shift can make colors look slightly different from the original. Very large images consume real memory during conversion, so an extremely high-resolution file may be slow or may fail on a constrained device or mobile browser.
Checking the PNG before you rely on it
Open the downloaded PNG at full size and compare it against the original side by side. Confirm the dimensions match what you expected, that colors and brightness look consistent rather than shifted, and that no rotation was introduced. Then check the size figure in the download panel: a noticeably larger file is normal for this conversion, but a result that is dramatically bigger than you can use is a sign PNG may be the wrong target format for your purpose.
If you converted hoping for transparency, verify against a contrasting background; you will see the original solid background is still there, since the conversion cannot invent an alpha channel. If color accuracy matters, view the file in the same application where it will ultimately be used, because the color profile may not have traveled with the image.
For anything official or financial, an ID scan, a signed document, a receipt, or a record you will submit, do a manual review of the readable content before you send it. Read the text, dates, numbers, and signatures in the PNG yourself rather than assuming a format change preserved everything; the conversion changes the container, not the correctness of what is inside it.
