Built for real problems

Sound familiar?

FormatOS exists for the file frustrations everyone runs into.

01

The form only accepts PDF

Drop your DOCX — FormatOS detects it and shows document conversion instantly.

02

Attachment is too large to email

Upload the image or PDF, choose compress, and download a smaller version.

03

PNG looks broken on another device

Convert to JPG or WebP in seconds — transparency handled correctly.

04

Video needs to be a smaller file

Upload your own MP4. If the media engine is active, FormatOS shows compression and trimming.

The honest difference

Three things that set FormatOS apart.

Upload first. Always.

You don't browse tools — you drop a file. FormatOS reads it and shows what's possible. Nothing more, nothing less.

Your device does the work.

Most operations run in your browser. Images, PDFs, data files — processed locally. No unnecessary server round-trips.

Only real tools appear.

If a feature isn't available or an engine is offline, it doesn't show up. No fake buttons. No dead ends.

Privacy and file safety

Honest processing, clear limits.

No vague promises. Here's exactly how your files are handled.

Browser-first

Images, PDFs, and most documents are processed in your browser. The file never leaves your device.

Temporary server only

When a server engine is needed, working files are cleaned up after processing completes.

No public links

FormatOS does not create galleries or shareable file links. Your output is yours alone.

Free to use

No signup, no paywall, no premium tier. Supported by non-intrusive ads only.

Common questions

Practical answers.

Everything you need to know about using FormatOS.

No. Upload your file first and FormatOS detects the format automatically, then shows only the actions that make sense for that file. You never need to browse a tool directory or select a category before uploading.

FormatOS is a free upload-first file utility. Upload a file from your device, and FormatOS detects the format, checks practical readiness, and shows only safe actions that are actually available for that file.

Yes. FormatOS is free to use. Any limits shown are processing, file-size, browser, server, or safety limits — not paid-plan limits.

PDF documents, images (JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, SVG), data files (CSV, TSV, JSON, XML, YAML, XLSX), plain text, Markdown, HTML, DOCX, ZIP archives, video files (MP4, MOV, WEBM, MKV, AVI), and audio files (MP3, WAV, AAC, OGG, M4A, FLAC) are recognized on upload. Most document, image, and data actions run in your browser.

Because only actions relevant to your specific file are shown. A PDF shows PDF tools. An image shows image tools. A CSV shows data conversion options. This keeps the interface focused and prevents irrelevant or broken actions from appearing.

Browser PDF tools include split pages, extract pages, remove pages, reorder pages, rotate pages, merge PDFs, add page numbers, add a text watermark, and remove common PDF metadata. PDF compression and PDF-to-image only appear when the required server engine is live-tested.

For browser-supported images, FormatOS can convert to JPG, PNG, and WebP, compress by quality or target size, resize, crop, rotate, flip, convert an image to PDF, and create fresh canvas exports that remove common EXIF metadata.

Where technically possible, files are processed in your browser. Some formats or conversions require temporary server processing. The interface shows when a server engine is required, and temporary server outputs are not public file-hosting links.

No. Metadata removal reduces common hidden file information, but it is not perfect anonymization. Review sensitive files before sharing them.

Lossy formats such as JPG and WebP may lose quality when compressed. Target-size compression is best-effort; very small targets can make text or images blurry. Review important outputs before submitting them.

Video files (MP4, MOV, WEBM, MKV, AVI) and audio files (MP3, WAV, AAC, OGG, M4A, FLAC) are recognized on upload. Media conversion, compression, trimming, extraction, and GIF output only appear when the required server engine is active.

No. FormatOS only processes files you upload from your own device. Downloading content from third-party video or social media platforms is not supported and will not be added.

No. FormatOS is an independent utility and is not affiliated with Adobe, Google, Microsoft, Apple, WhatsApp, or any government agency.
