Where a pixel mosaic earns its place

Pixelate Image breaks your picture into uniform square blocks, each filled with the average color of the area it covers. The practical payoff is obscuring detail you do not want legible: a face, a name badge, an account number, a house number, or a license plate captured in a screenshot you are about to share in a chat, a ticket, or a public post. Because the blocks merge underlying pixels into flat averages, the covered text and features become hard to read while the surrounding image stays intact for context.

Beyond masking, the same effect serves creative and presentation work. It produces a retro, low-resolution mosaic look for thumbnails, avatars, blog headers, or game-style art, and it can stand in as a deliberate placeholder or teaser image where you want shape and color without showing the real subject. For documentation and demos, lightly pixelating a region of a UI screenshot signals to a reader that something was intentionally hidden rather than missing.

It fits casual sharing and internal use well. For anything that will be published, filed officially, or sent to a regulator, an employer, or a court, treat pixelation as a visual edit and verify the result yourself before it leaves your hands (see the final section).

Drop, set the block size, apply, download

The flow is direct: drop or click to select one image (JPG, PNG, or WebP), then use the single Block size slider, which runs from 2px (subtle) up to 64px (heavy) with a default of 8px. Smaller blocks keep the picture mostly readable with a faint mosaic texture; larger blocks flatten detail aggressively. Press Apply Pixelation and the tool processes the file, then offers a download. Everything runs in your browser through an HTML canvas, so on this site the image is not uploaded and nothing persists once the tab closes.

Under the hood it shrinks the image to roughly its width and height divided by your block size, then scales that small version back to full dimensions with smoothing turned off, which is what creates crisp, even square blocks rather than a soft blur. The output is always a PNG named after your original with a -pixelated suffix, and image dimensions are preserved.

Honest limits on scope: this tool applies the effect to the entire image, and it works one file at a time. It does not let you draw or select a specific region, batch multiple files, choose JPG or WebP output, or copy directly to the clipboard. Where it can fall short

The biggest pitfall is treating pixelation as guaranteed anonymization. A small block size can leave text or faces partially readable, and pixelation is a reversible-looking transformation: in some cases automated or manual techniques can recover or infer hidden content, especially for short, predictable strings like PINs or plate numbers. If concealment matters, use a heavier block size and confirm the covered area is genuinely unreadable, or use a solid redaction box for true coverage.

Because the effect is global, fine detail you wanted to keep, such as faces in a group photo or surrounding text, gets coarsened along with the part you meant to hide. Choosing a block size is a trade-off between how much is concealed and how much of the rest stays useful. It is easy to over-pixelate and lose context, or under-pixelate and leave the sensitive part legible.

Two format notes catch people out. Output is PNG regardless of input, so a pixelated photo can be larger than the JPG you started with. And very large images take longer and use more memory, since processing happens locally on your device rather than on a server.

Check it before you send it

Open the downloaded PNG at full size and zoom in on every area that mattered. Confirm that anything meant to be hidden is genuinely unreadable, that the block size did not leave faint legible edges, and that parts you wanted to keep are still clear enough to be useful. Check that the dimensions match the original and that the file is the -pixelated PNG you expected, not the source.

Remember the effect is permanent in the exported file but does not alter your original, so if the result is too strong or too weak you can reapply with a different block size from the untouched source. For sharing, also glance at overall framing to make sure no second sensitive detail slipped through outside the area you focused on.

For any official, financial, or legal use, do a manual verification before relying on it: inspect the masked regions closely, ideally on a second screen or after reopening the file, and consider a solid redaction instead of pixelation where the content must be provably unrecoverable. Pixelation reduces legibility but does not certify that hidden data cannot be reconstructed.
