Limitations

  • The HEIC decoder is a one-time download the first time you use the tool, then cached by your browser.
  • Very large or burst-mode HEIC files can be slow to decode on low-powered phones.
  • HDR and wide-gamut color profiles are mapped to standard sRGB.
  • A few uncommon HEIC variants (for example some depth or multi-image files) may not decode; the main image is converted where possible.

Why HEIC trips people up

HEIC (and its sibling HEIF) is the high-efficiency format iPhones use by default — it stores great-looking photos in less space. The catch is compatibility: plenty of Windows apps, web upload forms, older photo editors, and messaging tools still don't accept HEIC, so an AirDropped or downloaded iPhone photo can simply refuse to open. Converting to JPG fixes that, because JPG opens essentially everywhere.

Quality, orientation, and what to expect

A quality slider controls the JPG output so you can balance file size against fidelity — keep it high when the photo matters, lower it when you need a smaller attachment. Rotation information stored in the HEIC is applied during decoding, so portrait and landscape shots come out the right way up rather than sideways.

Because JPG can't store HDR or wide-gamut colour the way HEIC can, those are mapped to standard sRGB during conversion; for everyday sharing the difference is rarely noticeable. A few uncommon HEIC variants — certain depth-capture or multi-image files — may not decode in the browser; in those cases the main image is converted where possible.
